Ready, set, adventure…from tent to touring in a motorhome

August 2021 left us with more than just memories of a typical camping trip. On the return journey from Cornwall, a simple idea sparked an adventurous plan: why not buy a Transit van and convert it into our personalised holiday home on wheels? The prospect of a DIY project sounded exciting to my creative mind, and during that drive, the seed for our motorhome adventure was planted.

An Unexpected Turn

Suggesting the idea to Adam of a DIY conversion seemed logical from a cost perspective aswell as utilising his skills as a carpenter, but he surprised me. Instead of an outright ‘no,’ to the whole idea, it was just a no to doing our own conversion but he was open to exploring other possibilities. In the following weeks, our research journey began.

A visit to a Midlands showroom added unexpected depth to our decision making. We met a really knowledgeable salesperson who talked us through the distinctions between a VW camper, a Transit-style van, and a motorhome. His insights went beyond the physical attributes, explaining how the VW camper could be utilised for day trips and weekends away and that the motorhome was the easiest choice for our family of four to do the types of trips we envisaged – a crucial revelation that influenced our decision-making process.

The NC500 Dream Takes Shape

We had a goal of a North Coast 500 (NC500) road trip in mind. With my brother’s wedding in Scotland on the horizon, we saw the opportunity to combine family celebrations with the joys of motorhome travel. It made us keen to make a decision within the next few months so we could start to make plans for the following May.

Navigating the Layout Conundrum

Choosing the right layout for our motorhome proved to be a challenge. Every amenity we desired seemed to come with a trade-off. Adam’s preference for driving comfort led to the decision to forego a bench seat behind the driver, and the compromise extended to downsizing the shower room in favour of using on-site facilities. We had always got on fine with them when we were in the tent so didn’t expect it would be an issue to continue that. We have since changed our mind as you will see later.

“After exploring various options, the Swift Escape 674 emerged as the perfect fit. Its open lounge, electric drop-down bed, and convertible space for Cady felt just right for our family’s needs and Adam didn’t have to compromise leg room with his driving.”

A Surprise Partnership

Our plans took an unexpected turn when we shared them with Adam’s parents. Their enthusiasm led to a proposition: a joint investment in a new motorhome, with shared usage during school holidays and term time.

It made the financial aspects more manageable. Opting for a bank loan over the showroom’s finance option made a significant difference in terms of interest payments and because we were going halves it bought the monthly payments to no more than car finance payments we have paid before. We learned about the value of motorhomes and that they do not depreciate at the same rate as cars so it is actually a really sound investment.

March 2022: A Day to Remember

As March 2022 arrived, so did the much-anticipated day of registration for the motorhome. Pick up day was really exciting as we headed to Lowdhams in Nottingham to collect her. I never really anticipated how our lives and mindset was going to change over the next two years because of this decision.

Lessons from the Open Road

Our journey wasn’t without its lessons. Here are some of the things I want you to know if you are just getting started with looking for a motorhome:

  1. Research Finance Options: Thoroughly research financing options before committing. Choosing a bank loan over showroom finance significantly reduced interest payments.
  2. Consider Second-hand Options: Second-hand motorhomes, if well-maintained, can offer the same quality as new ones. They often represent a fantastic value for money.
  3. Rent Before You Buy: For newcomers to motorhoming, renting can provide valuable insights into your preferences and needs before making a significant investment.
  4. Adapt to Your Needs: The layout you envision might change once you start using the motorhome. Be prepared to adapt and find solutions that suit your evolving needs.
  5. Sleeping Arrangements: Experimenting with sleeping arrangements is part of the journey. We found our sweet spot with the kids sleeping in the lounge area and us on the drop-down bed.
  6. Consider a Bigger Bathroom: If buying again, a bigger bathroom is on our wish list. It’s a significant comfort factor during wild camping or winter trips.

In Conclusion: Embracing the Road Ahead

From a post-camping idea to the realisation of our NC500 dream, our motorhome adventure is a testament to the unexpected joys of embracing the open road. We’ve learned, adapted, and cherished every twist and turn, and there’s more to come. So, where will our next escape take us? The adventure continues, and we invite you to join us on this incredible journey.
